You can choose from the available drafts

I think it generally goes:
3 of set 1
then 2/1 of sets 1 and 2
then 1/1/1 when sets 1, 2, and 3 are out.

If it turns out like mtg then Im sure sets 2 and 3 will also have the option for 3 packs of only the current set

Yeah, I'd rather do all Set 2 or Set 3 boosters, just because I want some of those shiny new cards. :)

Isn't that only for pre/release events

It depends on the set. Generally if its a large set you can draft with only packs from that set, but if its a smaller set you combine it with other sets from that block.

If I were to log into MTGO right now I would not be able to draft 3x set 2 boosters. If it is the second or 3rd set in a block your not able to only draft that set unless it's during release events

I haven't actively played Magic in awhile but I still keep tabs. Dragon's Maze is out now so drafts are RtR/GC/DM, but I thought that Gatecrash specifically was drafted solo. I mean, it's certainly not the norm, but from what I had heard/seen, this block you actually WOULD have been doing exactly that, if I'm not mistaken.

Most of the answers on the thread are about what drafts will comprise, but the original question is what the free draft buys you.

To expand on BossHoss's answer: The pro draft is basically just an alternate method of covering entry requirements (packs + fee) for any official draft tournament, one time per week. So whatever drafts are available, you just sign into one, say "this is my free draft this week", and jump in.

As to what drafts will be available, the other answers here cover that reasonably well.
