View Full Version : JtH - The "Thanks for 300" Official Contest Thread!

07-15-2013, 10:27 AM
Hi everyone,

The contest video is up!

This thread will also double as the official contest thread. Basically, to enter the contest, simply make a post saying what card, mercenary or champion you're most excited about, and why. For example, "the merc I'm most excited about is Glorfenblort as usually I'd never want to play Goblin Cooking Pot, but because of this guy I'm able to build a deck that is happy to include them".

Entries close 9PM PST on Sunday, 21/07/13. I'll announce winners shortly afterwards, probably within the first few days of next week.

As for prizes? There will be a winner and a runner-up. Both will have the option of choosing either a 'standard prize', or an 'alternative prize'. The standard prize will be 6 boosters for the winner, and 3 boosters for the runner-up. The alternative prize will be a raid run of your choice with yours truly, where I'll bring my sexy aussie accent, fun attitude, TCG and MMO experience, as well as some potentially devastating decklists and a raid leader buff to help you in your raiding adventure.

I'm looking forward to reading some great entries, and good luck to everyone who enters!

P.S. If I manage to hit 500 subs before the end of July, not only will I have another contest, but I'll be sure to include some very tantalizing prizes. So if you know of anyone who might be interested in the content, or want to throw up a link to the channel here and there, we'll all benefit. ;-)

07-15-2013, 10:30 AM
Grats on the 300 subs - fully deserved as you deliver clear well constructed and insightful content. Good luck and I am sure you will be at 500 subs before the end of July :)

07-15-2013, 10:35 AM
Drat; I totally should have included an extra bonus prize if I hit that.

Wait, I'll just do that now. OP update inc. :-P

07-15-2013, 10:42 AM
I am most excited for the wild-root dancer. I would never want to play any other card without it. In effect it can make any card playable in a world of unplayable cards. It is the best. Thank you for the prize.

07-15-2013, 10:45 AM
My favorite card so far is definitely Eye of Creation. Ive always loved big ramp decks in MtG and this card should be a part of any future ramp decks in Hex, as you ramp into a big creature (The green dragon preferably) and slam down an eye the next turn for a large number making the Dragon monstrously huge and crash in for tons damage.

07-15-2013, 10:48 AM
im really looking forward to seeing what i can do with a wildroot dances and chlor. matching those with fliers or trample will be so fun..

07-15-2013, 10:53 AM
Thank you for the content you have been creating on your channel! Just one minor criticism, could you try to do something about your mic? I don't know what kind of mic you have or if you have a pop filter/windscreen but I hear some clipping which makes it harder to listen to.

As for the question. I think Head Games is a very entertaining card not so much because I want to use it but the idea of someone flipping a table because they over analyzed what their opponent is thinking and chose the wrong answer and die to the damage. If someone just straight up did 5/10 damage to kill them they would probably be okay with it but knowing that they made the choice that resulted in their death makes it awesome.

Ah, the mic issue - actually, I probably can do something about it within the next week or two! I'm about to get my tax return, so will have enough surplus to buy something decent. ^^ Apologies for any irritation caused. >.<

Oh, I just thought all australians spoke in very low fidelity. Perhaps australian movie stars have to undergo some sort of voicebox upgrade or implant. That sort of thing.

07-15-2013, 11:00 AM
It's really easy question, which card is the best... ;)

Phoenix Guard Aeronaut

Reason: It's a Phoenix*! It should be enough to convinced most of people ;) If you are not convinced yet, there are some other arguments. This card has only one diamond threshold, so it can be put (splash) in almost every deck. Also great pick in drafts, it's a bomb, you don't want to play against it and as I said before it has only one threshold. It's a phoenix so obviously it has flying, which is great. The icing on the cake is his ability, that your opponent must choose how he want suffer in his next turn. I bet your opponent will make lots of bad decisions and you will use it to your advantage. I think this card is really awesome. Btw it's the best phoenix spoiled so far :D

*There is different troop type on the card - Human cleric. However it must be a bug or glitch ;)

07-15-2013, 11:03 AM
Also, that is a chicken, not a phoenix.

07-15-2013, 11:07 AM
I am most excited for Warlock Inquisitor as one of the cheapest major socket cards and its amazing effect of allowing it to be replayed over and over it has the potential to be the most flexible and unique 3 drop in the set, And double pluses for being a Vennen :) Love them spiders, and For PvE the equipment headband of siphoning is going to make my sapphire/blood deck with the champion power to give it permanent flight a nice way to constantly steal troops from bosses :)

07-15-2013, 11:26 AM
First of all, congratz on hitting the 300 mark, you're video's are my favorite of all the other Hex video's out there (and since the others are also really good, that is saying alot).

The card that gets me really excited is Vampire King (http://hex.tcgbrowser.com/images/cards/big/VampireKing.jpg) .

Obviously his effect and stats are just bonkers, but the real reason I like him so much is the art and the flavour of the card.
I mean, what's cooler then a Bald, Undead Vampire King, who has a cain and remains in control, so that he even has the time to drink a glass of fresly squeezed Blood.

And if some guests show up, which will get in a terrible "Accident", he celebrates with some hot undead chicks (read Vampire (http://hex.tcgbrowser.com/images/cards/big/Vampire.jpg)).

07-15-2013, 11:39 AM
Grats on your subs. I've always appreciated your posts on these forums!

My favorite merc, I think will be Cardboard Tube Samurai. I love Peek, so getting a free sapphire threshhold is a big bonus to me. I don't know what Meditate does, but that makes me even more excited to find out. I'm guessing it has to do with card draw, which suits me just fine. His charge ability, though, seems like it's well suited to a control-burn sort of deck that uses lots of card draw and little pings.

Favorite card so far is Shrine of Prosperity, because it seems very swingy and exciting.

07-15-2013, 11:40 AM
Also, that is a chicken, not a phoenix.

You have no heart :( Maybe it doesn't look impressive, but it's important what we have inside not how we look ;)

07-15-2013, 12:37 PM
I made a post on your video doh. Jamaal is my youtube name

07-15-2013, 12:39 PM
Also, that is a chicken, not a phoenix.

Sorry Frey had to double check, but it still looks like a chicken :p

Card: Wild root dancer; Love elves, love playing green (wild here) and card that boosts your troops when you play a resource is simply amazing. Runner up; eye of creation; my type of card. Don't know how it will be used and where but it has the potential to be amazing

Mercenary: Well it is between Ebonrock and Nine tail Monkey and all the sick stuff they can do in raids with spectral lotuses

Champion: Feather Drifting Downriver; well the ability to bestow a troop with permanent flight is amazing both in early and late game. Not to mention how awesome this gal will be in drafts

Also congrats on the 300 subs, you really deserve it and more. I'm also a subscriber :)

07-15-2013, 12:51 PM
It has to be Wild Root Dancer because within a blink of an eye you can have something from a tiny 1/1 into a 3/3 or more! It turns your weenies into meanies! People seem to laugh at shin'hare but throw in some WRD's and those "cute fluffy" bunnies suddenly become WMDs and within a blink of an eye you'll be dead. Honorary mention for me though has to go to Bun'jitsu for its art.

Congrats on 300 subs!

07-15-2013, 01:06 PM
I am interested in getting shrine of prosperity to work well in a deck. I think there could be some fun uses for it in pve with the right cards. If you have the chest armor on and pull it a few turns into the game then the card below it could be really fun.

07-15-2013, 02:56 PM
I'm most exited about Void Marauder and its Johnny Combo Potential, I just love copying spells! 4x Void Maradauder, 56x Actions, lets play Hex. :)

07-15-2013, 02:57 PM
I can't wait to level Burgamot Ebonrock up to 20. He's probably the most exciting Merc to date. I also really want Blessing of the Fallen to work.

07-15-2013, 03:02 PM
Congrats on 300. Also, I subscribed (been meaning to for awhile, just kept forgetting to log in).

As far as the card / merc / champion I'm most excited about, it's absolutely no contest. When I first started playing Magic the Gathering, the very first non-land card from my very first starter deck ever was a Plague Rat. I instantly fell in love. The picture was dark, the rat was sinister looking, and I just loved the idea of a guy that kept getting bigger the more of him you had (of course, back then, I didn't know that you were only allowed 4).

So it's only natural that my id is slavering to get its filthy little mitts on a handful of Pack Raptors. These mo-fo's are like Plague Rats, turned up to 13. I can't wait to build a whole deck around getting as many of these monsters into play by turn 3 as humanly possible. With a PvE deck, spectral lotuses, and the right equipment, I'm banking I can get 20 of the bastards out to ambush my poor unsuspecting NPC foes into oblivion. :)

07-15-2013, 03:47 PM
Good work on your channel Jax. Keep pumping out the fine content.

I am most excited for Zombie Plague. The idea of attacking the other player's deck, and being rewarded for it by a horde of mindless zombies, is very pleasing. What is worse than a second turn Zombie Plague? A third turn Zombie Plague to go with it! Sure I'll get beat in the face for a few turns by some furious orcs, but soon I will have an endless sea of zombies to do my bidding. A few raging orcs might level up to scary power levels (Over 9000!?!) wailing away on my endless horde, but that is nothing a good Murder can't solve. In short, a troop generator that operates by chewing up my opposition's army? Love it!

07-15-2013, 03:56 PM
I am most excited about the resource Sapphire. Everyone knows blue is what the smartest players play! Just bring on some decent counter spells.

07-15-2013, 04:04 PM
Orson's Dream, this is card is not only one that makes HEX different from Physical cards...but it just pretty exciting to imagine what are you going to get... maybe a card that you wont be able to see from another way..

07-15-2013, 04:07 PM
Orson's Dream, this is card is not only one that makes HEX different from Physical cards...but it just pretty exciting to imagine what are you going to get... maybe a card that you wont be able to see from another way..

That would be quite interesting if Orson's Dream could turn into troops you normally aren't able to build into a deck.

07-15-2013, 04:35 PM
There are a lot of Bomb Cards that are very exciting, but I think I am going to choose... Thunderbird. Here is why, almost all of my PvP is going to be Draft play, and for draft play this card is going to be a very strong choice for me because; 1) It is cheap to play, 2) Very few flight cards are currently available, 3) it appears there will be a lot of strong interest in Wild and Blood in draft, so grabbing a color that isn't chosen as often and lastly 4) this card synergizes well with so many of the other Shard colors.

I look forward to seeing this card played in a Ruby/Sapphire draft deck and see how it plays out.

07-15-2013, 05:01 PM
I'm most excited about Lady Cassandra; have been ever since I first laid eyes on HEX. I love her design, and her effect is amazing. I love using "cure burn" decks, so she's perfect for me. The Modular Breastplate makes her a real beast, and Lord Olwen's Ring makes me want to actually try a tri-shard deck.

Honorable mention goes to Princess Victoria.

07-15-2013, 05:31 PM
I am looking forward to hopefully getting Gax The Sly Roller because he is unique and fun. Brings a little risk and excitement into the game with the dice cards and their old school 'rolling'. That guy is just going to be fun to play in PvE and maybe some fun PvP games.

07-15-2013, 06:11 PM
This one might not be the best card in the game, or even truly be tournament play worthy, but one card I really look forward to playing is Relentless Corruption (http://www.hex-datamine.com/cards/Relentless-Corruption/180). This card is just epitomizes psychological warfare! The card art alone will give people the heebie geebies and then you get further gratification from pummeling your opponent with their own deck. :D I love that card.

07-15-2013, 07:57 PM

My favourite card is Legionnaire of Adamanth. He is why humans are the best race forever and ever amen. The human philosophy of superiority through race. He is stronger the more humans he is with. Combined with inspires from other human troops he will handsomely defend the bright shining species that is us!

Though I may never use him because of how perfectly pigeon holed he is into a pure human deck (human decks having other races as fodder is acceptable) I still think he is the most wonderful example of a super good time.

07-15-2013, 08:08 PM
My favorite card at the moment is King Gabriel. PvP legal 6/6 for 7 with Vigilance that gives all your cards Indestructible for once a game. Then in PvE he just gets better as he is Indestructible for as long as his doggie is there, then when he's not he gets angry and destroys everything (though it's only REALLY good if the effect is permanent, which isn't explicitly stated. Passes the Vanilla Test with flying colors, making him a wonderful limited bomb too, so he's all around fantastic and worth waiting for in my opinion.

07-15-2013, 10:39 PM
First off, congrats Jex. I watch your channel feverishly.

I'm incredibly pumped about Burgamot. If the Warrior preview is anything to go by, our main champions are going to be absurdly powerful, and mercenaries are going to have to pull off some insane shenanigans to keep up. Of the mercs we've seen so far, Burgamot is the only one who I'm sure has the chops. Making all your troops artifacts is ludicrous, as it allows you synergize with all those snazzy artifact based abilities we've seen (such Burgamot's lvl 5 and 15 abilities, or Elimination Specialist) without having to limit yourself to artifacts at all.

Suddenly, Runts of the Litter becomes a one-card Volcannon squad, or Inspiration Engine construction team. Journeyman Technician reduces the cost of every troop, and there's already a deck out there demonstrating how that can make your favorite card, Pack Raptor, obscene. Master Theorycrafter and Eurig the Robomancer become even more powerful bombs.

And that brings me to my favorite ability of his: Reverse Engineering. Burgamot starts the game with card advantage, and to make things even more ludicrous, the fact that all your troops are artifacts means you can tutor almost any card in your deck. If you need a specific card to pull a combo off - Wild Root Dancer, for instance - or you want to menace your opponent with an incoming bomb, all you have to do is pay an added, 2-shard cost and it's automatically yours.

I need to change my pants.

07-15-2013, 10:51 PM
Jax, thank you for your content, please keep producing it. You've also managed to garner my first ever post on these forums. I guess you could say you're inspiring action!

I don't tend to have favourites, just things I like and things I don't like. So I'm going to "cheat".

Favourite: Ascetic Aspirant (and to a lesser extent Trial of Faith). While the "tutor" ability of the final form is very sexy, it's the risk vs reward aspect of this card that wins the excitement stakes for me. I believe that this adds tension and excitement to the game (even for spectators) as players scramble to resolve or counter the pending final form. My greatest wish for Hex is that each colour has a card that personifies risk vs reward in the same way these do. Te'talca from Ruby doesn't count as there's no real risk beyond normal play, plenty of reward tho'.

Runner up: Sabotage. (There's heaps of cards that go here, but Sabotage was my first, so it holds a special place in my heart). Ok so the effect on the card itself isn't very exciting, that's not why it's here. I've listed it because it was the first card that "clicked" when trying to see the potential of the digital format. After reading this card's text I somehow realised that there was more to so many other cards that I immediately and without guilt committed as much as I could afford to the kickstarter. As a side note I fervently hope that Sabotage could be re-worded to be a foil for Eye of Creation so that its little traps are more of a deterrent to excessive EoC use.

Honourable mention: The Inspire keyword. Really excited by its potential and have wasted far too much time tinkering in decks with it.

Champion: Gozzog. Simple, effective and versatile. Perfect fit for a dumb noob like me. Am hoping there's a bloodthirst like ability or there are cards that benefit from direct Champ damage as there are cards like Righteous Paladin that benefit from lifegain because the right combination of those cards with this Champ makes me hope that I might even win a game, one day.

I also wanna thank Funktion, Kemical, MrSeriousBsns, Redichaos, HyenaNipples and HexTCGPro for helping me cope with my withdrawals from any meaningful contribution from CZE since the kickstarter ended. The tiny crumbs of info from CZE of late are just torture. *cry*

tl:dr - Favourite: Ascetic Aspirant because of risk vs reward lending tension and excitement to the game.

07-16-2013, 05:05 AM
Jax, welcome back!

As far as the card I am most excited about, I would say The Kraken. There are a ton of great cards, both PVE and PVP, in the game. When I saw this card, however, I immediately knew one of my first goals would be to build a Kraken deck. I can't wait to obtain his legendary trinket and be throwing opposing troops into the sea two at a time. Hehe, since he's not unique, I can't wait to play matches where I get more than one Kraken out just for fun, wreaking havoc on my opponent...toying with him if you will :)

07-16-2013, 07:16 AM
I'm going to have to go with Ritualists of the Spring Litter. I love synergy decks, and I love ramp cards, and this one kind of personifies the whole thing. Especially when combined with Eye of Creation, this thing can be insane.

07-16-2013, 08:07 AM
For me that is quite easy.
Itīs Lady Cassandra
First of all I really love the Design, okay the face is a bit strange, but goddamn that armor is nice and you saw the sword.
Also 4 Mana for a 3/4 is not to bad, but if you add the socket for Red/Blue and also the awesome Ring equipment she really gets quite cool. I mean Threshold fixing even if you donīt play her? That is awesome and also makes her splashable in almost any Red and Blue.
The effect is also super fun as well, just getting auto-life is awesome, but if you have a Card like Ozawa things could get really ridiculous real fast.
I mean yes it is a PvE Card but itīs what Iīm most excited about in the game anyways.
And this card really sums up what I expect from Hex:
- Awesome PvE
- Matter of Choice (Socket)
- Cool Card Synergy (Ozawa/Cassandra)
- Creative Deck Building (Ring)

07-16-2013, 08:11 AM
I am interested in getting shrine of prosperity to work well in a deck. I think there could be some fun uses for it in pve with the right cards. If you have the chest armor on and pull it a few turns into the game then the card below it could be really fun.

I think armor is banned in pvp

07-16-2013, 09:45 AM
I think armor is banned in pvp

All equipment is PvE only. But he did say that it would be fun in PvE.

07-17-2013, 09:42 AM
Congratz on the 300+ subs Jax.

I am really looking forward to the Cardboard Tube Samurai mercenary. This was the card that made me throw the extra dollars. Been a huge fan of Penny Arcade since 2002, I just had to own it.
The hero seems to be in nature with the Shin-Hare which is is something I'm really looking forward playing, in spite of his lvl 15 power allows him to gain a sapphire.
I cannot wait untill this game is released to us backers!

I hope you keep creating content, I've really enjoyed your channel thus far

07-17-2013, 01:49 PM
The card I'm currently most excited for is Adaptable Infusion Device (http://hextcg.gamepedia.com/Adaptable_Infusion_Device) because I want to build a 5 color deck.

07-20-2013, 04:45 AM
The card I am most looking forward to playing is Ragefire (http://hex.tcgbrowser.com/#!/cards&cardid=104&search=rage). I have always been a burn/aggro player in MTG and a fire mage for the most part in WoW. So, naturally, the idea of a burn spell that continues to get stronger will be a favorite of mine in both the PvE and PvP environment. The equipment for it isn't that bad either. I would love nothing than to play a Ragefire dealing 2 damage for 2, flip the top five of the top of my library, and then another 4 damage for no cost... or even 12 damage if there are two!

07-21-2013, 02:02 AM
Congrats on 300 subs :) The card I'm most looking forward to is The Wrath of Zakiir. It's PVE-only, but it's obvious why, seeing as it would be completely out of control in PVP. This card single-handedly shuts down any opposing decks that rely on ground troops as their win condition. Furthermore, it immediately makes every resource card you draw into a free Lightning Bolt (to put things in Magic terms), giving you amazing board control, not to mention a way to deal with any flying troops you do encounter. And to top things off, once it's in play, there's nothing the opponent can do about it; if they don't counter it right when you play it, then they're completely out of luck. In Magic, my favorite type of deck to play is red or black control that relies on using burn or kill spells to keep the board clear while I slowly edge out a victory, and this card seems perfect for that sort of deck design in Hex.

Plus, it comes with a very tempting equipment card in the form of Shard of Zakiir, which gives you a free dragon troop in addition to its other benefits. So far, all of the dragon troops we've seen are extremely powerful and cost around seven resources anyway, meaning this would be an extremely efficient pick. I'm looking forward to building all sorts of crazy PVE decks around this card when Hex goes live!

07-21-2013, 11:26 AM
The card I am most excited about is Shrine of Prosperity.

Shrine makes all of these gem creatures +1/+1 making wild beast rider a 5/5 when he comes in and a 3/3 thereafter and the warlock deal 4 damage when he comes in.

I've enjoyed the card the most when I am using a low charge 2 cost champion cause every source you play is going to charge your champion.

It's just a benefit for everything.

Especially if you can stack the deck how you want it to get the most of shrine with peek etc....

The only real downside to the card it doesn't do anything once you put it into play and have to wait till it's your turn again to start getting the bene's of the card.

07-21-2013, 01:09 PM
I am not really that excited about the one, the only the Wild Root Dancer because it is a 2 / 2 for 2 which is quiet underwhelming and I am left wondering why it is a fantastic ability but you know voila and the commander is a 3/3 and he makes Dino-chicken even more of a brutal beater and I cant wait to see all the birds become more confident swingers as a result of the root dancers pump effect, but honestly he does nothing without having another troop in play and he dies to the card I am the most excited about and that is extinction. Extinction is a Damnation equivalent in MTG (albeit costing one more to play) but I love black based control strategies and with all the shin'hare and troop based PVP decks I am going to be looking forward to building a tight mono-blood or blood-sapphire control deck if the cards flow from the remaining spoilers. I still think it is playable at a cost of 5, and the fact that I get alternate art copies as part of the kickstarter almost guarantees I will try them out.

07-21-2013, 02:50 PM
The card I'm most excited about is Blessing the Fallen.
First, because I love playing around with synergistic effects like inspire. Even if they are susceptible to a lot of different things to weaken them, they're a lot of fun to play with, and this card not only enhances that but helps mitigate some of the hurt with creature removals, board wipes.
Secondly, it seems like it could be quite powerful right now, compared to what it might be in the future because very little constant removal has been revealed so far, and what has is very expensive (Chaos Key, Judgement). Though we could be seeing some new, better inspire effects in the future as well.

07-25-2013, 04:36 AM
Thanks for all the entries; glad to see how enthusiastic everyone is about Hex and all it entails!

I'll announce the contest closed, but I have to take a short break from producing atm as I have a lot going on IRL atm (uni starts up again next week, I'm canvasing the area for a part time job, and I'm planning a holiday with the missus), so in a week or two I should get another video out - and with it, announce the winners. :-)

08-20-2013, 11:46 AM
Congrats to Frey and DrakarT, our lucky winner and runner-up. They're most looking forward to Phoenix Guard Aeronaut (I loved hearing how much Frey cared about this card from both mechanics and flavour points of view... except the fact that its troop type isn't phoenix :-P) and Orson's Dream (which is a card that greatly demonstrates the power and design space available to a digital TCG). They'll get their choice of 6/3 boosters, or the chance to do a raid with yours truly.

Of course, we know they'll both be choosing the raid. Who wouldn't want this dashing Raptor-Rider on their team, right? Guys? Hello? :-P
