Anyone else plan on taking time off at the end of this month for the release of alpha? I want to have a full 24 hour twitch stream marathon.

Matt

I had 264 hours of PTO on the books and was wanting to invest 80 into Beta Launch to chase world firsts. Sadly, I just got a new job two weeks ago as a contractor and no longer have PTO :(

/jealous of those who can do this though

I can't, since I only get a week, and that only starts in January, and I plan to use that for the family trip in the summer.

I have some days but I'm waiting for them to announce the date for the release of alpha. Then I need to do some strategic planning on what day I might get the invite (assuming a few waves over a few days as Cory has stated) and how stable I think things will be in those first few days. But yeah, plan to schedule a few if they announce it with enough anticipation for me to be able to. I hope they do!

I had actually already planned a vacation this month before I even heard about the kickstarter, luckily I'll be back in time I think before alpha hits. I'd feel bad not being around as much at work after getting back... but on the bright side I write my own schedule so I can probably swing it a little bit here and there at least.

Unfortunately I only have 1 week left to take off and it happens to be my 30th birthday at the end of the year.
Still I shall definitely be trying to get in as much Hex as possible regardless.

I might take a day off if we get dates soon so I can schedule it.

Yeah, I'm thinking a extra day off would be good to take for alpha.

A day off the most for me. I run a business with my brother, and i have to persuade him that i need a day off for no particular reason

I won't be taking time off for alpha but I will be for Beta once we are keeping cards. Marathon 24 hours of drafting to get my collection started and hit it pretty hard for a week or so :).

Nah... No interest. My PTO is too valuable to waste. I have enough saved up to put a down payment on a house when I switch jobs.

Taking time off for an online game's launch is a surefire way to guarantee that the servers will suffer massive problems and prolonged outages that day. True story.

I don't think that 15k people (http://www.thehexvault.com/blog/2013/08/31/dragoncon-2013-hextcg-pvp-design-panel/) will be enough to stretch test the servers, especially for a game with low requirements as Cory said (http://www.twitch.tv/knightsoftheroundshow/b/430004874 check 1:06:00), despite them willing to play all day. But i guess this remains to be seen :)

Twitch is kind of funny - sometimes I like to imagine how it would be if everyone started streaming and no-one was left to watch except for maybe the other 7 people in your draft all ghosting each other.

I would love time off and to stream but both would be pointless for everyone to do.

I'm going to hopefully stream loads of content when it's all live like others but with so many streamers and people actually playing the alpha I doubt there will be many watchers....

We will see though

As for time off.... I WISH! LOL

Currently I only take time off for new final fantasy releases hah

I like streaming, even if it's only for myself as to re-watch it later :) I'll plan to stream on a scheduled basis. Got everything already set up :)

I'll likely take a few days off at start of Open Beta. That's when content becomes permanent, right? Wipe at closed beta's end, but not between Open and Launch or whatever? We have a few months of Alpha/Closed Beta, so I'm in no Day-0 rush.

I've got over 250 hours of PTO and 120 of sabbatical. Turns out when you never take a day off, it builds up quickly. I will probably take a long weekend at the start of beta to delve into the game.

I actually have some time off at the end of this month, but if I were to choose I wouldn't use any time off for alpha, I'd rather use it when beta hits and the game has more features. Alpha may not be very exciting (except that we finally get to play the game), especially at the start.

i intend to work and play hex and if anyone deigns to assault me with questions tell them that its research and to piss off. because it is, and they should. or slackback.

if the baby boomers get to leave at noon to play golf and sleep at their desks literally and have me uncover or stab each other with their porn indescretions then they had best not annoy me with their prattle about playing a game during work.

its about rules systems and their interaction and im studying damnation to it all!

anyways, im always working, i should charge them hours FOR playing hex because of the offshoot ideas someone like me focusing on something for more than 10s in a row produces as the mind writhes in pain from capture to a single task.

i did too much internets growing up.

Just sayin'.. if you're at work, the servers will be fine. If you take a day off, a horrible bug will be discovered that will cause them to have to take the game offline all day for emergency maintenance. Trust me, and trust Murphy. His Law is truth. :)

Ah now i see what you meant; like when i took a day off to play diablo 3 :p

But then again it's another thing to have 5-6m people trying to log in simultaneously to an unprepared (as it was proved )server and another 15k people. But yeah let's hope that they ensure that i (we ) will be lucky and play this time :)

Definitely taking time off, and praying I don't get stuck with a 30 page term paper, for Alpha and Beta launch. Seriously Psyched for it.

I'm probably not going to be able to take any time off for Alpha, but I'll damn sure be installing it at work to try and play some games. I won't be able to draft at work, since that's a bit more of a time devotion than I can risk at any given time, but games with friends and PVE Arena thing will be doable.

I'm just gonna give my $0.02 on this.

Short version: don't do it.

Long version: As a long time gamer who's taken many-a-day off for launches/releases, there's about 25% chance at best that the days you're thinking of taking off will be fondly remembered. From small time betas, to "triple A" big budget releases, there's almost always something that severely hinders the enjoyability of launch week, let alone the actual day. This is no slight against any developers, or companies. I fully believe that devs and companies try their damnedest to make launch day as awesome as well all hope, but there are simply things that cannot be caught before hand, and there's alway adjustments and patches to be made.

If you want to take time off, you've got the final say, but I'd strongly recommend waiting for a week after BETA launch to really go ham on paid time off. Let Alpha go live, and if by The following Friday evening all is well, then you can make a better choice. However, drafting and other goodies are slated for Beta anyways. Maybe take one day off to indulge, but I'm going to wait for the Beta date, and then schedule time for the week following that. It Beta launches perfectly, it will still be going well the next week. If it has a catastrophic hiccup, I have time to wait, or even cancel time off until things improve.

Hope this provides some useful insight, cheers!

For the record, that's actually good advice. Game launches and vacation are usually a bad combination, leading to frustration and sadness. :)

If i look at the launch days of diablo and most MMO i what happy to get the game downloaded and patched in 2 or 3 day.

Im taking 2 weeks vacation for hex aswell. but not the alpha.... it's going to be reset... plan it for the beta so you can actually make use of said time to build up your bankroll/card collection. alpha is just a tease

I guess a lot of people won't accrue their time off over the course of the next few months? You could take off for alpha and get more days back between now and when beta wipe happens?

I don't think anyone is dumb for taking time off for it, no more so than going fishing, camping, a sports game, or anything else you might do on a vacation. This is a judge free zone. I can spare the time because I hardly take a day off from work and I accrue it pretty fast. I understand a lot of people can't and they should save their time for things that are more important to them, but no one is stupid for using their time the way they want to.

You could take off for alpha and get more days back between now and when beta wipe happens?

You could easily take time off twice, and it sounds like that's what you want to do. In that case, go for it! In my personal experience, though, early on in the release period of a new game, there are often so many problems that the time you take off ends up feeling like kind of a waste.

Say you take off a week, and for the first 2 days of that week, there's only server up-time of 4 hours, and infuriating bugs/disconnects/account resets/log-in ques. I'd probably be sitting there thinking I should have just gone to work, made some money, and still have that time off for when I can go into full-on geek mode, 24-pack of Mountain Dew on one side of me, 24-pack of my favorite brew on the other, and a Family Size bag of Doritos sitting in my lap while the Ramen is cookin'.

I could take time off for Alpha and Beta, but I plan to just double up on Beta time off, and even then only when I'm confidant that I'll be able to Hex to my heart's content (read: draft endlessly).

But by all means do what feels right to you.

I get 4.5 weeks of vacation a year, plus 2 "floaters" and since my normal day off is Monday I get an "In lieu" of day off pretty much every 3 day weekend. Im good on time to use....plus time banks and rolls over to next year....I never am at 0.00 hours left.

I just put myself down to 0 mid-August. :/
http://www.oldhomeweekpei.com/
We have a holiday for a horse race. (St. John's, Nfld has one for a boat race.)

From what I understand, 4.5 weeks is a lot for the US. Most people getting 0-3 weeks. Good job, or just been at it for a while and earned better benefits?
