View Full Version : netem: Test tool for simulating bad networks

It strikes me as I play the game that several issues (like the one when Cory and Colin played and neither player can do anything) seem to come down to timing issues/race conditions or such due to network issues.

I imagine it's exacerbated by me being in Sweden and hence having a fairly high network round-trip time to the server, but I can hardly finish any games (well, some against the AI, but I don't think I've finished a single PvP match so far out of some 10-15 tries).

Anyway, I just wanted to point to a free tool that can be used to test how you handle bad internet connections in a local area network setting which I suppose you have in your internal testing lab.

It's called netem and it's in most 2.6 linux kernels from the get-go, so it's just a matter of configuring it, which is fairly easy too. It has enough options to delay, drop, reorder and such to be a very useful tool for testing thing sort of things.

See more here: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/networking/netem

Shouldn't be that bad, because it seems that the game servers are located in Germany.

Really? That's disheartening. Every game I've ever played that farmed out it's servers to someplace in Europe had quite a few issues.

From what I've seen and heard they were using Gameforge (at initial release).

//Start_rant

Gameforge is the host you use when you want to slowly murder player enthusiasm.

Remember that 8+ hour download with files so corrupt that politicians looked squeaky clean (after the 37th time you've repaired)? Gameforge.

//End_rant

Germany has one of the biggest Server centers so far

They had a lot of big things in the 1940's too.

Doesn't mean any of it is good.

Could you elaborate on this? Certainly the initial downloads don't fill me with confidence, but I haven't heard of Gameforge before.

In the alpha client there is a config file with a gameserver ip entry which resolves to Gameforge. Even if Gameforge is not the ideal host they are located at DE-CIX Frankfurt.This is one of the best possible locations if you have one central server for all regions (NA, EU, ASIA). I at least would not trust into some kind of third world infrastructure which can be seen overseas ;)

The Hex config.ini file has their server as... GameServerIP=vm14.hex.gfsrv.net (Gameforge server)

As for how bad they are:

General Wiki info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameforge
So bad as a host literally no one was using them for three months this year (they've been around since 2003): http://trends.builtwith.com/hosting/Gameforge
What Gameforge does if they have direct control of a game: http://tera-forums.enmasse.com/forums/general-discussion/topics/Gameforge-trying-to-destroy-TERA-EU-community-on-purpose
Over 90% customer dissatisfaction on an AION forum poll (with almost 7,500): http://www.aionsource.com/topic/135214-gameforge-90-dissatisfaction-rate/ (note the picture in that forum post is old, if you click the linked poll it has ~6,695 No, ~733 Yes)
70% of GameForge employees wouldn't recommend it to friends: http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Gameforge-Reviews-E509818.htm (This one is a bit misleading since a lot of reviews are from former employees. However free food is a pro on almost all the reviews... kinda depressing really)
D rating on BBB: http://www.bbb.org/greater-san-francisco/business-reviews/video-games-wholesale-and-manufacturers/frogster-america-in-san-francisco-ca-316678 (registered as Frogster America in US)

tl;dr – I wouldn't wish Gameforge on my worst enemy. This really brings a lot of concern from me as a player.

@emeraldarcher post - that's as fatuous as saying alive folks in America are guilty of slavery.
