Last night I was toying around with the deck builder on tcgbrowser and as I was looking through Blood cards Sadistic Castigator grabbed my attention. I decided to build a deck around it. I scanned for good combos with it and came across Cerebral Fulmination and Inferno. The idea is pretty obvious here but I'll explain it anyway. Essentially you would get all three of these in play and watch your opponent's life tick away. Each turn they would lose 3 life to Inferno, then draw 2 cards (more if you have more than 1 CF in play) and take damage equal to the costs. Each turn. In addition to any damage you do with troops/spells.

The downside is that this could potentially take awhile to get up and running. To keep yourself safe you would need lots of removal and some way to gain health back as well as a way to get your Sadistic Castigators back after they get removed. One other thing I was wondering was do effects like "When an opposing champion draws a card" mean only when they specifically draw it or does it count for cards they discard off the top of their deck as well? If it does count then you could even splash Sapphire in here to get some Chronic Madness adding to the damaging draws.

Could a deck like this work realistically or is it just a cool idea on paper? Is it making a simple strategy more complex and contrived? I just liked the combination and thought it was interesting.

Here's my first go at a decklist for this idea (it's rough):

Champion: Gozzog or maybe Poca

Troops:
2x Fiendish Cabalist
2x Ash Harpy
3x Corrupt Harvester
3x Sadistic Castigator

Basic Actions:
2x Call the Grave
3x Life Siphon
4x Ragefire
2x Heat Wave
2x Oracle Song

Quick Actions:
4x Murder
2x Terrible Transfer
4x Burn

Constants:
3x Cerebral Fulmination
2x Inferno

Artifacts:
1x Adaptable Infusion Device (to get 1 Sapphire threshold for Oracle Song)

Resources:
10x Ruby Shard
11x Blood Shard

It lacks troops, sitting at only 10, but has plenty of removal to keep them safe. Plus Ash Harpy and Corrupt Harvester will take investment to get rid of due to Ash Harpy's Flight along with Corrupt Harvester being unable to be blocked except by blood/artifact troops (the Lifedrain also helps cushion those Inferno ticks). Fiendish Cabalist will almost always be fairly beefy since you will, hopefully, be flooding your opponent with cards. With those troops you can soften up your opponent so that, hopefully, on turn 6 you can drop Sadistic Castigator then watch your opponent destroy themselves when you pass the turn. With all the removal in here you can deal with any big meanies your opponent plays. Thoughts?

This is a deck concept I've been intrigued with as well. The wall I've run into is that you absolutely cannot play Cerebral Fulmination until you have a Castigator in play, it simply gives your opponent too much to work with- and if they remove your Castigator, the fulmination keeps going- pumping your opponent full of cards.

My thought is to instead use Crazed Rummaging. It gives you more control over when the card drawing occurs, and it gives your opponent much, much less control over what cards he/she actually gets to use. Plus there is no net-gain of cards, so your opponent will not advance in power.

Yeah, and it got a lot worse.

I would not recommend splashing sapphire. Without any dual lands in the game three shard decks are doomed to fail.

I'm not a fan of the Castigator at all. "Is it making a simple strategy more complex and contrived?" IMO, yes. You can make a similar deck that is dedicated to control and just use Ash Harpy as a more reliable finisher (which you already are).

Edit: Oh yeah, and in regard to your question about using the Castigator with discard; This does not work. If a card says "when a player draws a card then X" it only triggers on card draw.

Pretty sure you cant use Adaptable Infusion Device for sapphire unless you actually have at least 1 sapphire shard.

If the version on the Hex wiki is accurate you most certainly can.

You can. I believe you are thinking of Shard of Fate which works this way.
