View Full Version : Creating Your Own Cards Easily

03-05-2014, 07:06 PM
Hello everyone,

I posted about this close to a year ago on the Cryptozoic forums, but I've been meaning to post it here. The original version I had posted on Cryptozoic used a simplistic and ugly looking template, but I finished updating the template to give it a much cleaner, realistic look.

The link below will provide a download for Magic Set Editor (MSE), a program I have been using for years to make custom Magic cards, but templates can be added/created for just about any game. The template for DC DBG is already set inside of the MSE folder, so once you download the zip all you'll need to do is extract it and launch MSE.

Unlike most of the custom cards I've seen posted online, NO PhotoShop or image editing software knowledge is required. Simply fill out each of the card fields (Name, Cost, Card Type, etc.) and add in the image for the card.
This way, you can quickly and easily crank out dozens of card ideas that you may have so you can share them online or print them out and play test with them.

Here are just a few of the cards I've made:

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to respond below or private message me. I'm looking forward to seeing your custom cards.

===DC DBG===

DOWNLOAD (LAST UPDATED: 5/12/2014) (http://www.mediafire.com/download/2u5ho89g108bf4j/DC+DBG.zip)

Version History:

5/12/14 - Minor aesthetic change.
*Super-Villain cards now look like actual Super-Villain cards.
*Ongoing is now a sub-type that can be selected from an image file, rather than being text.

5/8/14 - Minor fixes to the code.
*Super Hero cards now use the correct mask, allowing for more text in their text box.
*Super Hero cards now correctly scale and center text.

5/4/14 - A few updates added due to suggestions.
*Starter and Weakness cards are now available as an option.
*Super Hero cards now have the correct template.

3/26/14 - MAJOR updates have been added.
*Cleaned up the masking on the card, so text won't "float" over the cost/VP icons on the card.
*Updated the 'Faction' icons to look cleaner and added in a few more icons. Will add more upon request.
*Added a 'Sub-type' line. You can use it for anything you so wish, but the one example I used above was 'Super Power - Ongoing' which saved me space in the text box.
*Removed the old legal jargon at the bottom of the old card images and replaced it with a box where you can enter in your own legal jargon. (IE. Artist credit, set date creation, copyrights, etc.)

3/24/14 - Allowed 'Faction' icons to be added to cards.

3/5/14 - Updated template.

===Blank Cards===

DOWNLOAD (LAST UPDATED: 5/18/2014) (http://www.mediafire.com/download/eiyi5rde17k2380/BlankDC.zip)

Verion History:

5/19/14 - Minor addition.
*You can now remove or add the cost and/or VP symbol from cards. So if you want a card worth only VP, you can now make that.

5/18/14 - Released.
*These are blank templates that can be used for any DBG.
*Choose from 15 different colors, each having three different forms.
*Name, Type, Text, Cost, VP ... Every field can be edited to anything you want!

I hate to bump my own post and I know people here are viewing this and downloading it, but I just wanted to say I made another large update to the original download, so go ahead and check it out.

So, I used your program and I must say... I am in love. I really enjoy designing things and watching ideas come to life; however, I'm really (really) illiterate and incompetent when it comes to something like Photoshop. Thank you very much for the program! If you're interested in seeing my creations--which involves a full cycle (1 of each card type) of my favorite "superhero" ever--please, let me know! I'll be trying to post them and gather other people's opinions as well.

However, if I may make a suggestion... I'm not even entirely sure this is possible with that program, but would you be able to make the text box for the effect a solid black and change the color of the effect text to white? And also the name... I much prefer the yellow/gold-ish name of the actual game heroes. Please don't misconstrue these as complaints! Just personal quirks. Thanks again bro!

Edit: If you could add an Image Comics logo to the choices of icons in the upper-right hand corner, that'd be great! ;)

Thank you so much Skar! I'm glad I could help and I'd love to see the cards you've made.

As for your suggestion, I actually already did all of that. You might just need to download the latest version; each card name is now the correct color and Super-Villains have a black text box with white text.

Also, I'll add the Image comics logo right now and update the link so you can get it all in one download.

EDIT: It's all up to date with the Image Comics logo.

I'm also new to forums... so I have no idea on how to make the images big like yours were. Sorry!

And here they are :) My favorite Superhero lol. Thanks for putting up with the ramblings and requests of a nerd! And quickly too!

Finally figured out how to get my account so that I could post. Working on some more but these are the 5 Superheroes I have made for the set I am working on. I still need to playtest these to see if they balance with one another, and then if they balance out with the the DC cards.

Glad to see you are able to post LordByron. I like the cards I see so far; make a new topic so you can show case all the cards you make. I too am working on a Marvel set that I will soon be posting on the forums, so maybe we can bounce ideas off one another.

I'm more than happy to bounce ideas around, probably help me balance some things to have two heads instead of one. Whn I get some more progress I will do that.

Bumping this to let everyone know of the new update to the DC DBG version as well as a new version.

The 'Blank Card' version allows you to edit the card in any way you want and offers 15 different colors each having three different version (normal, super hero, and super villain). The card type has been left off each template and can be edited to whatever you wish. This allows for you to create new card types in the same style as the DC DBG.

I hope you all enjoy it and I look forward to seeing your creations,
