How Far can you go with $10 in HexTCG

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBndMmIrzqc

Howdy Hexers! Funktion and I are starting a brand new challenge to simulate the new player experience with hex. We have gotten too cushy, too satisfied with our Kickstarter Accounts and we are bringing our selves back to the grind. To do that we are starting the Hex Budget Challenge! With fresh accounts and 10 dollars (1000 platinum) we will both independently embark on a series of challenges. No one can foresee Kismetís will but will we live the dream or suffer a shattered destiny! Follow along and find out!
-------
The Hex Budget Challenge is a personal test to see if Funktion and I can use our knowledge and the resources provided by the Hex community to live the dream! We will attempt to accomplish a list of goals and dreams all on a $10 budget. To add a more game show element, along the way we will have access to 3 life lines. These represent the awesome community and extraordinary events in Hex that can help us live the dream. Every major action and strategy will be tracked for new players to use and the further we can get without using any of our lifeline to more bragging points each of us will have! Just how far can a new player go in Hex with a little luck and a plan? Can either one of us live the dream?

Our Goals:

Play 1 swiss draft round and 1 Competitive draft round
Win 20 games in proving grounds
Play in a constructed tournament
Play in a Sealed tournament
Win either draft/sealed/constructed
Own x4 of every common
Own x4 of every uncommon
Build a competitive Constructed Deck

The Dreams:

Win 1 of each tournament format (draft/sealed/constructed)
Own 1 of every rare
Own 1 of every legendary
Own x4 play set

Our Life Lines: Life lines are our last resorts when we find ourselves unable to accomplish the goals or reach the dreams. We can call on a life line once and only once to jump our chances of pushing forward.
Three life lines are available: Draft Pack, Primal Pack, and Sponsorship.

The draft pack is like saving up for your next set of Packs.
The primal pack represents the whim of Kismet smiling on you at just the right time.
The sponsorship is like participating in an event and receiving that awesome Hex Community support.
Funktion and I will be chronicling our efforts weekly, and streaming when possible, our struggles to reach for the brightest shards. Each week both our channels will produce a video covering our progress as well as our focused goal for the next video. We will cover the strategy we used to accomplish the goals and will be tracking the specific actions and events for others to follow.

We will be taking volunteers for sponsorships. Funktion and I believe that this life line is a great way to cross promote the sweet community in Hex. A sponsor will be featured at the beginning of a segment or video where they unveil their sponsorship gift to the account and help advise us how we can use that gift to get ever closer to the dream. Anyone can sponsor and the lifeline volunteer will be chosen at random when the lifeline is used. We request volunteers be able to support at least 100 platinum equivalent donation but also not exceed a 2000 platinum donation. Life lines are meant to be a fun way to share the project with the community as well as represent extra pushes to accomplish the goals.
If you would like to volunteer as a sponsor please send a private message to either Funktion or myself and we will add you to the list!

We think this will be a blast to play as well as help show what the current new player experience is like in Hex when you compare it to entering comparable new TCGs. Please follow along each week as Funktion and Mokog reach for the shards in the sky on that lonely glittering moon of Entrath!

Its an interesting idea and sounds fun, but not to put too much of a dampener on things, it does not really simulate the new player experience.

Seeing as you are experienced in draft it should be reasonably easy to do well with just $10, where as a new player is probably going to go 0-3 or 1-2 and go bust after 3 drafts.

Ask Xiao - he's only ever paid that much and he has a ridiculous amount of stuff now, including 5000p on hand at one point. :P

Yeah, since they're pros, they should have to go at it F2P style! ;)

Sure sounds fun. I think maybe $25-$50 is more reasonable as it's the range of what a standard video game experience costs. But of course if someone can go infinite on only $10, sure why not?

We looked at the project from this angle. If I was going to buy into a new physical TCG how much would I spend If I was in high school with a job (which i have some personal experience in :-p) I would buy a starter and if I liked the game I would easily go in on 3-12 packs over the course of a month if I felt i needed new cards. 10 bucks for a starter and about $42 for 12 packs and that is about the net value the we expect from the lifelines. We then put restrictions on when the lines could be used and created some realizable and dreamy goals.

As for doing well in drafts, I have had a terrible slump recently. I just hope I don't get rick rolled when doing the challenge.

This is great for newer players to see how much value a $10 can be in the game! So I am hoping that some interesting info comes out of this :D

Two videos are uploaded for this on my channel, though I will warn you these are fairly boring ones:
-Youtube: New Account (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdjBfqhE9vI)
-Youtube: Starter Deck trials (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTq43gsZ0uE)

The real excitement will come later today when I'm able to finish post-production on my first draft. I streamed the entire session and it was pretty incredible.

look forward to watching the draft. Would be interesting to see this done by someone with no knowledge of the game. I'm sure a bit would change, as most drafts done on the $10 would start in Swiss, unless they choose to begin by rare drafting then playing the auction house.

With those colors, I mistook the Rotcaster for Mumm-Ra at first. Is that intentional or is my animation nut showing again?

Good content Funktion. $10 with a bit of knowledge can allow a player to go infinite. It's not easy, but if you start off strong, the cushion you build yourself can set you up to never buy plat again.

Is there a breakdown of what you bought with the $10 and what you gained? It would be nice to follow all those small tidbits if you can't make the streams.

Yeah we are working on a spreadsheet, we have one but it needs to be more audience friendly. It is pretty ugly as is.

This is exactly the kind of thing new players need. Way more than King or Pro level players bragging about "going infinite" which I feel does a disservice to most new players. Carry on.

Draft video #2 & 3 can both be found here:

Budget Challenge Draft #2: Bird Bait (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npeN8ye4g3s&list=UUHiODsAc2L3PqUBBDMyx0HQ)
Budget Challenge Draft #3: 5 Color Cornucopia (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Guwj7V5rBUg&list=UUHiODsAc2L3PqUBBDMyx0HQ)

#4 should be up later this week as well.

I think Mokog and I are probably approaching the point where we should start considering building our constructed decks, maybe would be a good chance to do a recap video and move on to the next chapter so to speak.
