View Full Version : Arena Race Challenge League Season 1

Alucard
04-02-2015, 12:56 PM
I’m excited to announce the HEX Arena Race Challenge League Season 1!

Where: Alucard’s Twitch Channel (http://www.twitch.tv/Alucard2004)
When: Every Sunday at 2 PM PDT / 5 PM EDT / 10 PM GMT

Every single Sunday I will be issuing a challenge to the HEX Community where I will present a trial in the Arena to complete in the fastest time possible. This will be a competition among Twitch livestreamers and I will be organizing and hosting commentary on my Twitch channel to moderate and showcase the progress of the race. I encourage anyone who currently streams or has ever wanted to stream to participate! Even if you cannot participate, I still encourage you all to come out and see what will be a fantastic and fun weekly event! As always, I will be giving out prizes throughout the cast to viewers.

Based on placement in the race, you will receive ranking points on the official SpeedRunsLive leaderboard and top players will receive prizes! Check the info below for rules, more details about SpeedRunsLive, prizes, and how you can get involved!

Arena Race Challenge Rules

Failure to comply with the following rules may result in disqualification from the race:

The time taken to complete each Arena Race Challenge includes deckbuilding.
You must start in the Card Manager with an empty deck – no cards or equipment may be present in this deck.
You may name this deck and/or select sleeves before the race begins.
You may NOT load a pre-existing deck
Each week, the challenge that I issue will be posted in the Race Chat once the countdown timer says GO! Time starts here. All racers will then open the link that I post with the challenge and proceed with deckbuilding and the Arena Race. An example of a challenge can be found here. (http://i.imgur.com/7vbwfb6.png)
Each challenge will provide details of a goal. The most common goal would be to defeat the final boss of the Arena. The final boss of the Arena is the 4th tier, 5th encounter.
Each challenge will provide restrictions and bans of PvP cards, PvE cards, and equipment if applicable
Each challenge will provide whether Tier 1 is allowed to be skipped
Each challenge will provide if you may restart your Arena run or not
If any aspects of the challenge are unclear, please feel free to ask in Race Chat. I will clarify as soon as possible. To that end, racers should keep an eye on Race Chat for clarifications.
If any aspects of the challenge are unstated, you may assume that they are legal
In order to participate for prize support and leaderboard ranking, you must be able to stream your speedrun on Twitch. If you cannot stream, I do encourage you to participate as well, however you will not be eligible for prize support or leaderboard ranking points.
You must create an account on www.speedrunslive.com and use this account to enter the race. For details about using SpeedRunsLive, please see the SpeedRunsLive section below.

Prizes

I will be providing prize support for every weekly challenge. Every week, a Free Draft is up for grabs for the victor of each challenge! Starting 5/10/2015, second place receives 400 Platinum!

End of Season Rewards

Season 1 Ended on July 5, 2015. Prizes were awarded as follows:

1st Place: Showsni - 3000 Platinum
2nd Place: BrynhildrTCG - 2000 Platinum
3rd Place: Cephied0 - 1000 Platinum

SpeedRunsLive

From SpeedRunsLive:

SpeedRunsLive (SRL) is a community based around speedrunning after the popularity of livestreaming took off. SRL Races are currently the most developed facet of SpeedRunsLive. Races let you run in direct competition with others simultaneously. Players set up races, and the RaceBot gives them a countdown. On GO! they start at the same time and both play through the game with the intention of finishing the goal first. Races are livestreamed so others can watch the action.

Every game raced on SRL has a ranking leaderboard. Players may rise to a higher rank when they do well in races. The stronger the opponent, the more you have to gain. The weaker the opponent, the more you have to lose. Most of all, we're all in this to have a good time. While races have potential for really great competition, it's all about fun.

SRL Registration

In order to register on SRL for the races, the following steps must be taken. Once registered, it will be an easy process to race whenever you like. Most of the following information is stated directly on the SRL website, but I am putting this out here for ease of access. I am also linking a couple videos below that can help walk you through the process. These are a tad outdated, but I think they can help.

Download an IRC client or use a browser-based IRC client: I would recommend mIRC and HexChat as good options
Join the SpeedRunsLive IRC channel
New York— irc.speedrunslive.com
Amsterdam— irc2.speedrunslive.com
Channel— #speedrunslive
You can use the web-based IRC to join the chat as well: http://www.speedrunslive.com/channel/
If you are unfamiliar with IRC commands, you can familiarize yourself with them here: http://www.ircbeginner.com/ircinfo/ircc-commands.html
Register your nickname that you want to use for all future races. It is recommended to use your Twitch handle to register here because it will make it easy for us to identify you for commentary linking your Twitch to SpeedRunsLive with ease.
Step 1: Sign on to the nick you want to use for all future races, and type /nickserv register password e-mail.
Note: It is important that you enter your actual e-mail address, in case you need to retrieve your password in the future.
Step 2: When logging onto the IRC, you can log in by signing on to your nick, and typing /nickserv identify password.
Step 3 (optional): Set up automatic login within your IRC client. You may do this in mIRC by going to Options, then the Connect menu, then the Options menu. Click Perform, and type /nickserv identify password.
mIRC will automatically enter your password when you join the SRL IRC in the future.
You can find a more indepth FAQ about registration here: http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/registration/
Set your stream by typing .setstream twitch/name in the #speedrunslive channel to link your stream to SRL. You only need to do this once.
NOTE: Only Twitch is supported by SRL racing
NOTE: Please archive your broadcasts on Twitch. This will make it so that we can go back and check your VODs after the race if necessary. Failure to do so may result in disqualification.
You can familiarize yourself with RaceBot commands here. http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/commandlist/
Important commands for racers include .enter, .ready, .unready, .time, .goal, .done, .undone, .quit, and .comment
Review the rules to racing on SRL here: http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/rules
Review the racing section of the FAQ: http://www.speedrunslive.com/faq/#racing

I've also created a channel over at #hextcg on the SRL server if we want to place to chat and hang out! Please come by if you're a racer, viewer, or just want to hang out and talk HEX!

If you have any further questions, you can feel free to ask me here, in my own personal Twitch channel, or in the SRL channel and the moderators and I can help.

Timers

If you are looking for a timer, I would recommend WSplit or LiveSplit. SpeedRunsLive will be tracking the official time of the race, but this can be useful for your viewers. You can find a list of useful timers at:

http://www.speedrunslive.com/tools/

It should also be noted that you can set up your own races on this platform with your own rules to race others for ranking points as well. This is a completely viable way to accumulate rating points throughout the season. However, you will need to be careful about making sure that the races that you create on your own adhere to SpeedRunsLive policy. Abuse of this platform is not tolerated by SpeedRunsLive and may result in disqualifications or bans.

I know there’s a lot of information here guys, but I want this to be something awesome for our community. Those of you who know me know that I’m very passionate about speedrunning and I have always enjoyed the concept of racing video games. I think bringing this kind of focus to HEX can create some interesting competition and a lot of entertainment!

Please do not hesitate to contact me or via Twitch message if you have any questions or concerns.

Hope to see you guys every Sunday!

Commentary of the Race (http://www.twitch.tv/alucard2004/v/4029574) - Overall, very pleased with how this race turned out. Really exciting and close matches between players! :) It's really unfortunate about the Misfortune bugs. These kind of things are facets of the game that we have to deal with since we're still in beta. In the end, it's all about the fun, so if these happens, I encourage players to restart or forfeit the match and move on.

Cool! Always great to see more people get into streaming and speedrunning! :) If you need any help getting set up, we have a great group of people on Twitch that can help you get started with livestreaming and SRL, self included. Let us know!

One of the things about the race is it's fun to see people thinking up interesting decks on the fly based on the format that's provided. Despite that, it's actually an interesting idea to maybe give a hint for what's to come the next week. This Saturday I will keep you guys in the dark. I'll mull it over. Maybe for future weeks I can give a clue to get you guys thinking about what's coming! :D

Hey poizonous!

Depending on interest level and how it works out for everyone, we could potentially move this to during the week. I think we'll stick to this Saturday for this week. I'm always open to feedback, so please let me know if you see any issues or gaping holes in the rules.

Thanks!

If this didn't take place at the exact beginning of Saturday night date night, I would actually consider joining (even though it would mean finally working out all the details to run my own stream :p). Sadly, I won't be able to participate or watch... but I love the idea, and good luck to everyone involved! :)

I hope you get a good turn-out.

It's a fairly intimidating challenge - both from a setup perspective, and then in-game knowledge to build quickly and efficiently within a unknown framework.

Not factoring in the time, and date challenge as well.

Good prizes though, so I hope you get nice participation. Will be fun to watch.

Hey ossuary! We'll see if we can try to work something out during the week. I really do want to accommodate as many people as we can. It's really great that you're interested in getting involved in both streaming and the race! As I said, we'll keep this Saturday's event the same since it's just tomorrow. I'll keep you guys posted if the timing does change! Have fun at date night! :)

Oh Draft_Punk. It's not a hateful Arena Race Challenge. It's loving challenge! Think of all the diverse decks we'll see played in the races! :)

It's definitely going to be a little work if you want to jump into streaming for the first time. However, once you get everything set up, it's really easy to jump in and have some fun with it! You'll also find it's a really rewarding experience. I'm hoping that this challenge will encourage more people to jump into streaming to show off their skills and personalities to the greater HEX community! :)

We had 7 racers in my playtest when I did a Rock Arena Race last Saturday and I thought it was a fun time - I think a lot of community members enjoyed it! 2 of the racers were community members who I had never seen stream before, so I'm hoping now that I've announced this formally, we'll see a lot more people join in!

Just got a stream set up for this. Aww yeah :D

Awesome! I'm glad we could help you get set up with your stream. Welcome to the streaming world! :D

Good Luck to everyone

Afraid, being in the UK it's not really an option to participate

This'll be most interesting if Robots and Orcs are weakened in some way as I imagine 95% of players would go for those decks

Definitely going to be a strat to concede twice during the run to cut time. People will figure out which enemies take the longest to beat on average and just concede past them.

And good luck with the casting Alu! Methinks this one is gonna be a fair bit more intense than the test. Sounds like you'll have quite the showing.

Yeah, I think it won't be so easy to just use Orcs and Robots in some of these challenges. Time will tell and it will be up to the players to be creative about what they think can perform well! I've got some really crazy challenges planned!

Maybe we shift the time a little earlier to accommodate the European folks. It's tough with my own schedule, but I want to make this work for everyone! :)

Yeah, that's definitely part of the speedrunning process! No risk, no reward! Speedlimit55 actually did this in our playtest in the final tier to push through and win it!

Unless, of course, "no conceding" is part of the challenge.

And yes, it all depends on the challenge! :D
