View Full Version : Very Low ESL Turnout

The ESL tourney only had about a 100 people show up to play. And first round my opponent had the expected red green majesty deck. I can play the same, but I find it unfun. For a game that's been out quite a long time, turn out numbers are pretty low.

Personally, I barely play the game anymore. Hope the next set addresses the fun issues.

100 for ESL is actually an increase in players isn't it? I thought they were only turning out 50-70

Could be an increase, but still I think a healthy game would at least have 1,000 plus for constructed. I'm sure people are drafting, but constructed isn't what I wish it was. I worry the player base is too small, which is unfortunate. I can't play this game solo.

The first one had 92 then 91 and then 56 and last one 46 (after they changed the date) - EU
And for NA 91 - 63 - 47 and now 64.

Yep, numbers don't lie.

yeah..makes you wonder, doesnt it ?..especially since money is on the line...there is this other thread which might give a clue to what is behind this...it probably is a mix of reasons but I indeed think that the fact that the meta is seen as unfun by a big number of people has to do something with it

Yeah this week was an hour earlier than before so I didn't get home until after it had started... plus after 10+ hours yesterday in the free tournament it wasn't a huge priority.

What was the point of this post?

A 3rd party tournament, for a game in beta, after a grueling 10 round tournament the day before, in a meta many people are upset with, on a Sunday afternoon before a major US holiday didn't have a huge turnout? That doesn't strike me as huge news.

If the point was to complain about TM we already have a thread for that.

Slightly off topic, but do we know how many competed in the stress test? Wish I could have taken part, but time zone fail for me.

Cool, thanks.
Great to hear it went so well.

I already had plans that I could not change by the time i found out about the event. Now that I know that it will be happening every weekend I will work harder to make sure I have the time slot clear :-)

Player base seems very small. Yes, it is a concern. Hoping for better. The game is great, I think we all hope numbers will pick up after the PVE side is fully fleshed out.

I can tell you 100% I didn't play it because there was a 10 hour+ tournament the day before and I was burnt

Keep in mind that the reason there was 46 for the EU tournament was likely because it was going on at the same time as the 10 round Swiss Stress test (since the EU tournament started an hour before it) This means that the majority of players are going to be more likely to go for the Stress Test tournament instead since 256 players from it are getting packs unless it failed (which it didn't) in which case all the players would of been reimbursed with tickets with something such as tournament tickets. People are more likely to go for the higher chance of a prize than a lower chance.

Fair enough, could have been a scheduling thing. Just supposedly there was a modest cash prize, so figured more people would show.

on saturday there was a tournament that had 750 people join.

didn't feel dead at all to me...
thats 750 people, regardless of TM decks that a few people are seriously PTSD about, because its all they talk about whenever they have a chance...

Sealed though. And no cost since it was on test. Many more folks are likely to try that. Even though it was free on Live, Constructed has a cost associated with it.

Yeah, I don't even like the competitive side of gaming much, and I would have played - but it was a long weekend and I had previously established plans to go backpacking and did just that. Probably a number of folks were simply on a trip.

Hex need to get a proper prize-supported tournament series (eg like ESL) in the client rather than using 3rd party tools and challenges back & forth.
